  5. player (soloist in first performance of Walton's viola concerto, 1929); teacher
  6. in Berlin from 1927. Banned by Nazis as musically "degenerate" (although not
  7. Jewish); taught in Turkey from 1933, settled in United States 1939. Noted
  8. teacher and theoretician. Composed operas Mathis the Painter (on the life of
  9. the painter Grunewald) and The Harmony of the World (on the life of the
  10. astronomer Kepler): he based a symphony on each of these.
