People In Music History
Hindemith, Paul (1895-1963) German composer, formerly violinist and viola
player (soloist in first performance of Walton's viola concerto, 1929); teacher
in Berlin from 1927. Banned by Nazis as musically "degenerate" (although not
Jewish); taught in Turkey from 1933, settled in United States 1939. Noted
teacher and theoretician. Composed operas Mathis the Painter (on the life of
the painter Grunewald) and The Harmony of the World (on the life of the
astronomer Kepler): he based a symphony on each of these.
